Guide Review - Book Review - The Thyroid Hormone Breakthrough by Mary Shomon

The guru of all-things-thyroid, Mary Shomon outdoes herself with The Thyroid Hormone Breakthrough. No, the entire book is not all about breastfeeding, but her detailed chapter on "Postpartum and Breastfeeding Challenges" is the reason I feel so compelled to tell moms with thyroid problems to pick up this book.

The information is well-researched, but, unlike other clinical health books, Shomon has a very warm, genuine tone that allows her readers to really trust the information she is disseminating. This isn't written by a man who just happened to study thyroid disease and decided to put his information into a book...Mary Shomon suffers from thyroid disease and is very upfront about her background. She states,

"I'm not a doctor or health professional...I never expected to be writing books about thyroid disease. But back in 1995, at the age of 33, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune condition that causes hypothyroidism. The diagnosis was a turning point in my life and in my career."

Shomon began to research, share her knowledge with others and became a nationally-recognized patient advocate. She is a New York Times best-selling author and has written myriad magazine articles about this topic. Other books include: The Thyroid Diet, Living Well with Hypothyroidism, Living Well with Autoimmune Disease, Living Well with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, and Living Well with Graves' Disease and Hyperthyroidism.
