When babies begin to teeth, they temporarily nurse in a different way (often chewing on the nipple). Their gums are sore and the pressure feels great. The mother is the one to suffer the consequences. The key word here is "temporary." The mother does not have to wean the baby, even when the teeth come through. If the baby has been nursing effectively until this point, he knows how to latch on properly and biting should not be a concern. When the baby is biting, try the following:
- Give the baby something cold to chew on prior to a feeding.
- Instead of pulling the baby off, pull her in closer.
- Maintain a good milk supply so there's no frustration.
- Stay relaxed.
