Definition:

This occurs when there is a higher than normal level of bilirubin (bile pigment) in the blood. Babies with jaundice will typically present with a yellow tone to the skin and whites of the eyes. Newborn babies are often jaundiced when they are 3 to 5 days old. It is normal, however, for the baby's skin to have a low level of yellowing.
