North Dakota Mom Pleads Guilty to Drunken Breastfeeding

Friday July 3, 2009

A 26-year-old North Dakota mom accused of breastfeeding her 6-week-old baby while drunk has pled guilty to child neglect. When sentenced on felony charges in August, Stacey Anvarinia may face up to five years in prison. However, Judge Sonja Clapp says that Anvarinia will not have to register as an offender against children.

Police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at Anvarinia's home on April 13. They saw Anvarinia breastfeeding while intoxicated. Alcohol consumed by breastfeeding mothers can be absorbed into an infant's system, and Anvarinia's levels weren't low.

This is the first such case prosecuted in North Dakota. I'll report more as August rolls around. Stay tuned!

While she shouldn’t have been nursing drunk – I’m also assuming that there were other issues in the household.

I really hope that this doesn’t snow ball into a *no* alcohol while breastfeeding. Current research shows that a glass of wine when breastfeeding is ok but being HAMMERED isn’t.

This is very true… I believe there were other issues in the household but that is no excuse for nursing a 6 week old helpless child while intoxicated. I think the sentence in prison is good enough for her however, I think her name should go on the list. Who knows what else she was doing to this child while intoxicated… As far as caring for it. For example, what if she were to “accidentally” dropped it? That can cause life long issues with the baby’s health and much more. She would get No sympathy with me.
