Happy Earth Day!

Wednesday April 22, 2009

We already know that breastfeeding is the healthiest choice for our babies. Every day we read or hear about studies showing new benefits for both mom and baby. Yes it can be challenging at times, but the benefits pay off for everyone. For mom, it's great to know that breastfeeding reduces your risk for breast and reproductive cancers and that you're less likely to have post-partum depression. You'll also heal sooner after birth than formula-feeding friends. Also, in these horrible economic times, studies have shown that parents of breastfed babies feel less stress than others and one reason may be that health-care costs are lower for them; they have to take less time off from work for illness; and, most significantly, breast milk is free! With that said, in honor of Earth Day, let's talk about how breastfeeding is good for the environment!

Breastfeeding is clearly the perfect environmentally-sound choice. Breast milk is a totally renewable resource. Putting aside pumping products, which are completely optional, there is no outside manufacturing or storage. It does not require plastic scoops and huge containers, which get thrown away within days. Breast milk does not contain any artificial hormones or ingredients that you can't pronounce. In addition, there's never a worry about contamination. Breastfeeding is the greenest choice for parents and their babies. The Earth appreciates it!
