What Exactly Is It About Breast Milk That Is So Powerful?

Monday November 24, 2008

We know that breast milk is the optimal nutrition for a baby and that there are benefits galore. But what is it about this fluid that makes it so powerful?

New research is focusing on two specific components of breast milk—lipids and oligosaccharides. The hope is that, by studying their significance to infant health, researchers will discover ways to improve foods and better ways to treat gastrointestinal diseases, for infants and adults alike. J. Bruce German, a food science professor at the University of California, Davis, says, "The one thing that has evolved with humans, to nourish humans, is breast milk. It is the ideal evolutionary model for what nourishment should be."

Well said.
