Breastfeeding Advocate, Betty Wagner Spandikow, Dead at 85

Thursday November 20, 2008

The breastfeeding world mourns the passing of Betty Wagner Spandikow, co-founder and former CEO of La Leche League International, the largest breastfeeding advocacy organization in the world. A mother of seven, at a time when breastfeeding was out-of-style, Spandikow believed "that breastfeeding was nature as it was intended," says her daughter. "Why, she would ask, should we create chemicals [formula] to take the place of that?" She also wrote "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding," a book that has sold more than 2 million copies and has been translated into eight languages and Braille, which has been considered the Bible of Breastfeeding to many. We will miss her greatly.
