Is It Possible That Freeze-Dried Formula Can Block HIV Virus In Breast Milk?

Monday July 14, 2008

We understand that in developing countries it is necessary to breastfeed, but the risk of HIV is raging. Although yet to be tested on humans, a new theory shows that the risk of HIV transmission through breast milk may be reduced if babies are first fed a good bacteria that could potentially destroy the virus. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago feel optimistic as they have designed a method that allows the good bacteria to remain active, even without refrigeration, which is critical in developing or poor regions.

Amazingly, the good bacterium the researchers are studying is Lactobacillus, which is found in dairy products such as yogurt and kefir. After much testing, they learned that lactobacillus can be freeze-dried to remain heat-resistant. Findings show that this bacteria can "capture" the HIV virus. Dr. Marc Siegel, an associate professor at the New York University School of Medicine and the author of False Alarm: The Truth About the Epidemic of Fear states, "HIV, though quite deadly as a disease, as a virus is relatively weak, so it's not surprising to find out that lactobacillus can act against HIV and maybe prevent its incorporation into mammalian cells." So now that they've figured out how to keep the bacteria alive without refrigeration, what's next? How do they get this bacteria into the babies?

Formula.

Another researcher in the study, Lin Tao, an associate professor in the department of oral biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago states, "Once the lactobacilli are ingested, the bacteria will colonize the infants' GI tract, and as long as they are fed milk, the bacteria will remain alive and able to capture HIV." Who would have ever thought that probiotics would have any relation to such a deadly disease? Truly remarkable.
