Update on Plastics

Wednesday July 9, 2008

Don't let all of the advice about plastics confuse you! Sophie Uliano, eco-consultant and author of Gorgeously Green, summarizes everything for us. How does it relate to breastfeeding, you might ask? Here are the highlights:

  • Always avoid plastics with No. 7 printed in the triangle on the bottom of containers. Safer numbers are 1, 2, and 5. How does it relate to breastfeeding? Check out those pump parts. Make sure the numbers are in line with these recommendations.
  • Never microwave baby food in any type of plastic container. How does it relate to breastfeeding? Well, we all know not to microwave expressed milk in a bag or bottle, but make sure the food you mix with breast milk isn't microwaved in plastic, either.
  • Choose sippy cups, bottles, and pacifiers free of BPA. How does it relate to breastfeeding? We don't want that precious fluid to ruin! Look carefully at the product information before buying. Many products, such as Born Free bottles and Playtex Nursers, do not have BPA in them and are the best choices if you're pumping and feeding your baby expressed milk.
