Canadian Lactation Consultants Take A Stand By Quitting

Monday June 30, 2008

It seems like a contradiction of sorts...Renee Hefti-Graham and Linda Good, lactation consultants at Burnaby Hospital outside Vancouver, BC, resigned after the Nestle Corporation organized a presentation about baby nutrition and formula at a local hotel. This technically violates the World Health Organization's International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes. Hefti-Graham and Good quit after their manager said the guidelines from the World Health Organization were just "propaganda" and would not censure the presentation. "We just didn't feel supported," said Hefti-Graham. And rightly so! As lactation consultants, we promise to promote, protect and support breastfeeding and when you're not supported by your manager, where do you turn? But the question remains: Now that they're gone, what about all of those moms and babies in the hospital who need them so desperately? Is standing on ceremony worth the cost? Join me in my forum to chat about this controversial topic!
