Founder Of La Leche League, Edwina Froehlich, Dead At 93

Sunday June 15, 2008

The breastfeeding community is saddened to report that Edwina Froehlich, the epitome of true breastfeeding support, has died at the age of 93.

When Ms. Froehlich was told at the age of 35 that she was too old to make milk, she was inspired to create a community-based organization to educate and support breastfeeding women. This was in the 1950's--a time where there was virtually no research done on the health benefits of breastfeeding and most pediatricians recommended formula. However, Edwina Froehlich ignored that advice and breastfed all of her children.

And, although she is now gone, she's not quite done with her work. She has donated her body to the University of Illinois for research. Edwina Froehlich was, and forever will be, a pioneer.
