Antipsychotic Drugs And Breastfeeding

Tuesday May 20, 2008

Many women feel the "baby blues" or depression in the early postpartum. However, there is also a high number of women who result in postpartum psychosis. It is imperative, for both baby and mom, that the disorder is managed properly via medication.

Dr. Salvatore Gentile, a researcher from the Department of Mental Health in Salerno, Italy, recommends that doctors treating psychosis in breastfeeding women look, first and foremost, at the general effectiveness profile of the particular drugs. It is especially important that the safest medication is chosen for drug-naive patients. At the same time, if a mother has been on an antipsychotic drug and it has proven to be effective, the regimen should continue during breastfeeding. It is important to note that there are two exceptions to this rule: clozapine and olanzapine--both are contraindicated during breastfeeding.
