The Total Elimination Diet
Wow, now this is a committed breastfeeder! Rebecca Boone, a mother in Boise, Idaho, found that her baby daughter was allergic to some foods found in her breast milk. She had colic, blood in her stool, a persistent runny nose, and diarrhea. So the question remained...with thousands of possible allergens in a diet, does one go for complete elimination in their diet or hypoallergenic formula?
Rebecca Boone decided on the diet route, living on organic turkey, rice and squash, with seasonings including canola oil, sea salt, and pepper. Hypoallergenic formula is very expensive--about $800 a month-- and it wasn't covered by her insurance. The baby did improve after two months on the diet, but she still bled from time to time. The results were fascinating: She did have a bleeding disorder which exaggerated the reactions in addition to being on the "extreme end of the food intolerance spectrum."

Hi,
My 5 wk daughter experiences very similar symptoms (diarrhea, blood and mucus in stool, colic) in the past 2 weeks. I have just switched her from breast milk to Nutramigen (hypoallergenic formula) at pediatrician’s advice to test for allergies in my breast milk and her bleeding in the stool got a lot worse. I plan on doing the Elimination diet in parallel, so I can switch my daughter back to breast milk eventually. Do you happen to know what bleeding disorder the baby in the case described had and how old she was when the bleeding started?
Thanks so much!
Hey Cristina,
I don’t know but check out foodlab, a yahoo group. They might have some answers for you! Good luck
