New York Joins Thirteen Other States to Protect Breastfeeding in the Workplace

Sunday October 7, 2007

The New York State Legislature has passed The Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Act, which requires New York employers to provide breaks (either paid break or meal time each day to express milk OR reasonable unpaid break time) and a private location to accomodate nursing mothers or mothers who need to express their milk. Most importantly, the Act prohibits any discrimination against an employee who chooses to express milk at work.

The other states that have passed similar laws are: Connecticut, California, Georgia, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island,Tennessee,Virginia, New Mexico, Mississippi, Hawaii, Illinois and Oklahoma. Let's hope to get the other 36 on board.
